Junk

I really enjoy going to car boot sales and antiques shops. In the summer, there was an outdoor antiques fair in Firle near Lewes. It was a gloriously sunny day with lots of visitors. There was a great atmosphere with music, pizza, coffee and cake too. I enjoyed relaxing on the playing field and did a few v quick sketches. It was a really good view as I could sit behind the sellers. I worked one up into this linocut.

When I was last in Hastings, I did a few sketches of boats and fish. Then this crazy ‘magical’ still life caught my eye on the beach. I’m not sure who set it up, perhaps one of the fishermen? Anyway, I particularly liked the cows head that was made of paper mache. I made him a bit friendlier for my print as the original also included bulbous eyes and red paint for blood! I also changed a few other elements and added seagulls. One of whom is reflected in the mirror on the piano.  I also printed it on brown paper to give it a recycled feel.

Hastings Fish

Always enjoy returning to Hastings. I was at the Jerwood gallery and stopped off at the fish shop nearby. Had an interesting chat with the owner about the Old Town. The window displays are always impressive. Tried to sketch as quickly as I could so I wasn’t blocking the view for passers by. So much to draw – monkfish, mackerel, mullet, crab, prawns, sprats . . . you name it, it was there! I used some artistic license to incorporate the most interesting (or prettiest) fish.
