Utrecht

I always enjoy returning to Utrecht especially on such a sunny day. I arrived very early and it was nice watching the city wake up. I sat by the canal, plugged myself in and sketched the pretty scene ahead. Later walked to the park and sat under a tree and sketched the passing cyclists with the Dom tower in the background.

Camden

I spent a few hours drawing around Camden. Really enjoyed returning to the area. My sister lived nearby a good few years ago and I always enjoyed visiting. It wasn’t as busy as it gets during the weekends so ideal for wandering and sketching.

I plugged in my earphones, sketched around Camden and walked towards Primrose Hill. I sat by the canal and took out my pens. A couple of Canada geese thought it was lunch time. I felt bad to disappoint them. However I did incorporate them into the scene.

The houses and trees lining the canal were good to draw and passing traffic.

It was a slightly awkward spot to sketch so I was happy to discover a bench nearby. I did a few drawings of the barge in front of me and included a friendly black bird.

I even ended up chatting with the owners. Light faded and it was getting cold. Time to move on.

Amsterdam

Early Thursday morning was spent in Amsterdam and I returned to the public library. Sketched behind St Nicholaas church. So quiet and peaceful ( except for a few road sweepers). Very relaxing.

On Saturday, the whole city came alive for Amsterdam Canal Pride. On arrival, there were already thousands of people looking out of windows and waiting on bridges and by the canal ledge. Very lucky to find a good spot and sit down as there was still over an hour before the parade started. Sat behind a boat party blasting out dance tracks. All the party goers were very exposed on top of the boat but didn’t stop them having a good time. Couldn’t resist doing a few sketches and tried to capture some of the funky (and not so funky) dance moves!

The sun was out for the Canal parade. Great atmosphere and dance music. Lots of balloons, banners, fancy dress and fun! The parade ran for over 2 hours and then the heavens opened and I abandoned a sketch before taking cover under a cafe’s awning. Lasted about 10 minutes and fortunately the sun returned for the rest of the day.

Amsterdam

I love sketching in Amsterdam. There’s so much to see! The architecture and canals always catch my eye and  I particularly enjoy trying to capture all the cyclists that pass by. I could quite easily sit in a bar all day sketching city life. I’ve included a sketch of the Westertoren which has the tallest tower in Amsterdam.  I’ll be including a number of sketches from Holland on my blog.
