The drawings shown in this gallery are generally larger pieces drawn on location.
When drawing in the open air, I enjoy getting lost in the moment. The challenge for me is trying to capture a sense of place as I sketch - its like freeze-framing a fragment in time.
With drawing I can react immediately to an event, like a dog scampering by, or a fishing boat returning to harbour. I can make expressive marks quickly and instinctively when using charcoal, ink and pastel. This is often when I think I get the best results! Capturing these transient moments breathes further life into my work.
